Project description

In June 2024, after storms, mudflows occurred on the A9 Simplon Pass road. The Engi Gallery was also damaged. The ongoing reinforcement and repair work is being carried out under traffic – using a traffic light system from FRIKE. In the initial phase, the client noticed that the 30 km/h speed limit was frequently disregarded by road users. Consequently, they approached FRIKE with the request for a speed display sign.

In discussions, we reassessed the need and concluded that a speed display sign would only partially provide the desired benefit for the client and construction personnel. Based on our experience, we recommended to ASTRA the use of lag-stable FRIKE rumble strips to effectively address these challenges. Their use is primarily mandated in Switzerland for securing work zones on highways, but as a traffic calming measure, they are mainly known from the USA. The rumble strips alert road users to the construction zone and force them to slow down – whether on highways, in 30 km/h zones, or in urban and rural areas.

In November 2024, we installed the rumble strips in the Engi Gallery. Since then, an adjustment of vehicle speeds to the speed limit has been observed. In short: Thanks to the lag-stable rumble strips, drivers are now consistently easing off the gas.
