Project description
On behalf of WALO Bertschinger AG we equipped 35 tunnel niches at ASTRA Branch 1 with our innovative F1-80 Road Airbags. This system is the only certified road restraint system according to EN1317, specifically developed for tunnel niches.
Thanks to its unique features, the F1-80 Road Airbag clearly outperformed conventional products during the tendering phase. Its advantages include:
- Safety: Highest standards according to EN1317
- Compactness: Ideal for tight spaces
- Flexibility: No ground anchoring required
The ground clearance in particular convinced the client, as the lack of space in the niches and existing pipelines made anchoring impossible.
The installation of the 35 vehicle restraint systems was carried out by WALO and supervised and accepted by our expert team on-site. The work took place during the night on the A1 highway in 2024 and was efficiently integrated into other ongoing tunnel works.
Thanks to the well-coordinated and smooth installation process, road closures were minimized to a minimum. The F1-80 Road Airbag thus proves to be not only a smart and safe solution but also an economically efficient alternative for demanding infrastructure projects.
